Slow Opening Excel 2003 Files in Excel 2007 (Updated)

When opening Microsoft Excel 2003 files in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 without having Excel 2007 already running you may find that files that a long time to open (20-60 seconds) while Excel 2007 or even Microsoft Office Word 2007, PowerPoint 2007 files take only a portion of that time to load.
The solution to this problem is easy and does not require any additional software other than the standard Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  1. Open Windows Explorer (explorer.exe)
  2. Select Tools | Folder Options from the menu
  3. Go to the File Types tab.
Excel 2007 - Folder Options in Windows Explorer
Excel 2007 - Folder Options in Windows Explorer
  4. Select list item XLS (Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet) and click on Advanced.

Excel 2007 - Folder Options in Windows Explorer, Editing Action for Microsoft Office Excel File Type (Rolled Up)
Excel 2007 - Folder Options in Windows Explorer, Editing Action for Microsoft Office Excel File Type (Rolled Up)
If the “Application used to perform action:” field the default value should be “C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12EXCEL.EXE” /e” . Change this to “C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12EXCEL.EXE” /e “%1″ . Remember to enclose the full excel.exe path and %1 in parenthesis. Since Windows 95 this is a way to escape spaces in file names; %1 will return the file name of that file that is being opened by double-clicking.You can uncheck “U se DDE” but Microsoft Office Excel 2007 will bring it back to what you see above when you next open it.
  5. Just confirm (hit “OK” ) on all the Microsoft Windows Explorer dialogs and next time you open a Excel 2003 file in Excel 2007 without having it already running you won’t have to wait!
  6. If the above listed steps don’t fix the problem, simply add the Lookup Wizard add-in in Excel.  Some readers have reported that solved the problem for them! To install it click the Office Button, Excel Options, Add-Ins, and then click Manage Excel Add-ins | Go on the bottom of the window, select Lookup Wizard and click OK!

Calibrating Your Notebook / Laptop Battery

http://www.sunny-bajaj.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/battery_calibrate.jpg

You should calibrate your notebook or laptop PC battery at least once every 3 months under normal use. Short discharges and recharges do not fully synchronize the battery’s fuel gauge with the battery’s state-of-charge. This can result in the amount of power available in one cycle being less than expected or the battery meter being inaccurate. It is normal for the battery to hold less power over time but these simple instructions will help you get back some of this loss.

  1. Disable the Windows Power Management
    1. In Windows, right-click the Desktop and select Properties in the menu list.
    2. Click the Screen Saver tab and then click the Power button.
    3. Under Power schemes, select Always On in the drop down menu.
    4. Under Settings for Always On power scheme, select Never in each of the drop down menus.
    5. Click OK on the Power Options Properties window and then click OK on the Display Properties window.
  2. Fully charge the battery
    1. Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
    2. Charge the battery until the Windows battery meter is at 100%.
  3. Fully discharge the battery
    1. Remove the AC adapter.
    2. Keep the notebook on until the battery has completely drained and the notebook automatically turns off.
    3. Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
Note: in some cases you may have to take the battery out and put it back in the notebook / laptop before it will charge again.
    4. Keep the AC adapter connected to the notebook until the battery has completely charged.
  4. Enable the Windows Power Management
    1. In Windows, right-click the Desktop and select Properties in the menu list.
    2. Click the Screen Saver tab and then click the Power button.
    3. Under Power schemes, select Portable/Laptop in the drop down menu.
    4. Click OK on the Power Options Properties window and then click OK on the Display Properties window.
Other tips for conserving battery power on notebook and laptop PCs:
  1. Reduce the brightness of the screen
  2. Remove peripherals when not in use. External hard drives, CD-ROMs, Zip drives, PC cards, and other peripheral devices can draw power from your battery even when they are not in active use. Disconnect them when you have finished using them.
  3. Reduce the speed of your processor. The faster your computer works, the more quickly it uses up the supply of power. By cutting down on processor speed, you can extend the charge of your battery. Methods to reduce processor speed vary from model to model, and your manual should provide instructions for doing so.
  4. Turn off the Wireless On-Off button when it is not in use. If your notebook has one, press the Wireless On-Off button so that the light turns off.

How to Reboot a Blackberry without Taking the Battery Out

Occasionally, you will need to reboot your BlackBerry, (e.g. if the BlackBerry seems to get stuck hour-glassing, or doesn’t respond). 8830 users know this all too well because of the phone getting stuck when 2 calls come in at the same time.
Did you know that you don’t have to pull the battery? Just press ALT-CAP-Backspace to reboot your BlackBerry.
  • Note: The first time you do this, your Blackberry will only release your cell connection and re-acquire. In order to truly reboot your Blackberry, press ALT-CAP-Backspace, and as soon as the screen comes back up, press ALT-CAP-Backspace again.
  • On newer BlackBerry models (i.e. 8310, 8830), this only works if you press the right hand caps key.

If you’re a lucky owner of a BlackBerry Storm, you will need not be able to reboot your BlackBerry Storm by using the Alt-CAP-Backspace keyboard combination because the BlackBerry Storm does not have a keyboard :-)   But there’s still a way to avoid having to take the battery out.  You will need a free application called SoftReset which you can get OTA from here: SoftReset for BlackBerry.
